THESIS STATEMENT
ENIAC was the first digital computer making it one of the most important
moments in history. Forever paving the way for modern computer.
ENIAC is the first electron numercal intgrator and computer this means it is important to the history of computers.
ENIAC building started in 1943 at the University of Pennsylvania and ended in 1945. The purpose of it was to calculate math problems.
ENIAC could calcuate complex equations faster then a person.
ENIAC was designed for helping calculate artillery strikes.
The cost of this computer was $487,000 in 1945 but now it is $7,051,000.
It weighed 30 tons, and it occupies a room 30 by 50 feet. ENIAC has around 18,000 vacuum tubes,
70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, 6,000 switches, and 1,500 relays making ENIAC very complicated.
The code name of the project was Project PX
The press called it "The giant brain".
ENIAC's first programers studied the feasibility of a thermonuclear weapon.
ENIAC could solve differential calculus equation that took 20 hours to solve by hand in seconds.
The original six programers where all highly skilled women, Kay McNulty, Betty Jennings, Betty Snyder, Marlyn Meltzer, Fran Bilas and Ruth Lichterman.
Process Paper
I decided to write about the first military computer becouse I have always liked electronics and computers. I started by googling about the first computers and found out about ENIAC. I read several sources about ENIAC. I continued reading until I felt I had seen all the different aspects of the story.
I feel that the first computer broke barriers in many ways. Buy being the first electrical computer it represents breaking through the barrier into the modern computer age. The first computer program was to calculate the motion of neutrons for the atomic bomb at Los Alamos helping to break down the barrier into the Nuclear age. Finally all of the original programers where women mathematicians representing some of the earliest women breaking into the STEM fields.
